Although a relatively young company, Edge Sounds represents countless years of thorough research and experience in fields of electro-acoustics, sound engineering and design, and music production. The history of our company goes back to mid 50’s and is closely tied with the history of the Novosibirsk State Conservatory of Music (now Academy) in Russia. Back then, in 1956, the State Radio Committee donated the Conservatory some studio equipment. This allowed the Conservatory to establish a recording studio and an Electronic Music Department. At the very beginning the quality of sound recordings made here was not that great, but thanks to the enthusiasm and professionalism of the department members the studio was rapidly developing. Many valuable recordings of prominent performers, such as G. Pekker (cello), V. Arkanov (voice), M. Liberman (violin), M. Boguslavski (piano) and S. Richter (piano) were made here in 60’s and 70’s.
In the 80’s and 90’s, thanks to the collaboration with the NTONYX company specialists and its leader Alexei Ustinov, there were some important renovations made. At this point computers first appeared in the studio, and the first in the USSR Computer Music Department was established by the Conservatory. Several software products of NTONYX and Geniesys Voice were than developed here, by the department members.
In 2003 the studio went through major renovations and reorganization, involving considerable private investments of some department members. Now, with its state-of-the-art recording facilities, studio became one of the best in Russia. It also became a private institution - the NGK Records, retaining tied relationship with the Academy of Music. Students and faculty members now have excellent opportunity to use the NGK Records’ two studios (digital and analog) with total aria of about 2000 square meter for study and research, and the NGK Records have full access to the Academy resources, including a Concert hall with the only in Siberia concert organ, the ethnic musical instrument museum and the ethno-musicology department database. All the NGK Records leaders are professors of the Academy and the members of its Computer Music Department. Among numerous clients of the studio are Sibvez Corporation, LG Electronics Novosibirsk, Siberia Airlines, Clear Water Company, MusicLab, Lommeta Company, Theater "Old House". In the summer of 2005 the core team of the NGK Records established this company, the New York based Edge Sounds LLC to have representation in the United States and to continue the work on a new level.
It is also worth to mention that Novosibirsk is the capital of vast Siberia region and is located in an ethnographically unique area. It is found in the middle of Russia, between eastern and western Siberia, not far from Chinese, Mongolian and Kazakhstan borders. The Academy of Music leads constant expeditions to the region to find, to record and to research the musical culture of diverse ethnic groups living there, as for example, Tuva, Evenkia, Buryatia, Altai, Yakutia, and others. Now it is done in all digital quality. The database of such extraordinary materials collected by the Academy is huge and gives us a lot of information about the musical culture and musical instruments of these small, hard-to-find and barely studied civilizations, existing far in tundra and high in mountains. In our work we will try to bring some of these treasures up.
